Images of Development

Whether they are supporting literacy initiatives of women’s groups in Niger, reinforcing dairy producers’ capacities in Nepal, or promoting fair trade products in Bolivia, Uniterra volunteers have a different perspective of the world around them.  Their photos illustrate their concerns and highlight what draws their attention.  Let them show you their vision of development.

HIV is a major problem in Ghanzi, Botswana. Advocating, raising awareness and preventing the expansion of the disease are crucial. As part of his work in this sector, Ryan (right) collaborated  with his research partner, Muki Agadi (left), who was working with a group to build an outdoor gym for the youth of Ghanzi. Ryan was in Botswana from May to July of 2006.



Capacity Building of Agriculture Extension Staff (Monitoring and Evaluation Training)

In Vietnam from January to September of 2008, Saphia is supporting the National Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Center to establish monitoring and evaluation system for its agriculture extension projects. In April, she went to Lao Kai, Northern province, to provide training to staff about how to improve their skills in conducting monitoring and evaluation of projects. She took the opportunity to introduce the importance of gender role in agriculture projects. The photo illustrates group exercises where participants worked on a collection of tools and sources related to gender.


Preventing HIV/AIDS

In front of the Center for Volunteer Detection of HIV/AIDS, members of the Association for Development of Preventing Initiatives in Health/Solidarity (ADIP/S) paint murals to promote awareness of HIV/AIDS. This particular painting illustrates how to prevent the transmission of the disease from the mother to the child. Michel was an Advocacy Specialist for Uniterra partners working in HIV/AIDS in Burkina Faso form January to December 2006.



The Caravan of Well-Being

The Caravan of Well-Being was the name of the cleaning fatigue to which these rtwo young Bolivians were participating. The cleaning campaign was organized for Earth Day, April 22nd, 2007, in the municipality of Curahara de Carangas, in the high Andes. Miriam is an Organization and Community Health Advisor with the municipality since July 2006. Her family and she will be back in Canada in July 2008.
