Photo Exhibition : At the Heart of International Development
In the Fall of 2006, the Uniterra programme’s public engagement unit launched a photo contest on the theme At the Heart of International Development, asking all WUSC and CECI field volunteers since January 2003 to send in photographs. More than 100 photos were submitted.On Tuesday, January 12, 2007, a jury composed of Louise Larivière of Reporters Communications, specialist in photography events, and Benoit Aquin, professional photographer, undertook to select the winning entries. The jury stated that it was very impressed by the variety and quality of the submissions.

1. Educating the girls of Niger
Niall McKenna undertook a media internship in the primary education sector in Niger. Her photo: a student looks through a window at a primary school in Tamaka.

2. A chat at the market
Marlène Caplan did educational advocacy and support work for girls during her internship in Ghana.

3. Three Burkinabese Women
Philippe Chevalier worked on creating a computerized management system together with these shea nut producers of Songtaaba. The photo was taken at a village celebration in Songtaaba.

4. Haïdara
Lucie Gauthier created graphic design tools for the DANI artisans’ cooperative in Niger. Shown in the photo is Haïdara, a Touareg (nomadic) smithy from Agadez who specializes in jewellery.

5. Technical follow up in a potatoe field
Isabelle Marquis helped the Union des organisations paysannes (union of farmers’ organizations) in Ecuador to further their knowledge of agriculture techniques. Shown here: producers ready to pick potatoes to be sold directly to area restaurants, allowing farmers to get a fair price for their produce.

6. The meeting of vaccination
Laëtitia Boudaud did a media internship in Mali. Here, a community centre nurse in Sabalébougou, Bamako, makes sure that each child has a vaccination booklet.

7. Development of NITC that benefit rural women
Chantal Bernatchez worked with women in Burkina Faso to improve the quality and variety of shea nut products. Photo taken during a workshop on communication and new technologies for the SONGTAAB-YALGRE organization.

8. To Give
During the Forum d’économie sociale in Dakar, Senegal, Jeanne Charbonneau took this photo while touring an eco-tourism project on a marine reserve. A child offers a piece of a ram slaughtered for the occasion. The photo captures a moment of symbolic sharing.

9. A little girl sweet as honey
Marie Marsolais worked with the Centrale des enseignants (teachers’ union) in Haiti. Her photo shows a girl filled with great hope for her future in sunny Haiti.

10. Talc cutter
Photo snapped by Lucie Gauthier, who worked on creating graphic design tools for the DANI artisans’ coop in Niger. The photo was taken at a cooperative of stone (talc) masons in the Azel region near Agadez.

11. The child leader
Myriam Fehmiu worked in communications for a coalition of eight organizations in Guinea. The picture of this child was taken during CECI educational activities with students at schools set up in refugee camps.

12. Small Peul girls
Nicole Morais donated her time to the fair-trade sector in the Agadez region of Niger. Her photo shows young Peul girls at a gathering held to celebrate the end of the rainy season.

13. Child at a building site
Édith Caron was involved in the project by École Polytechnique de Montréal. She snapped this photograph on the construction site of a warehouse in Malawi.

14. Young Nepaleses
Muriel Mac-Seing is presently working as a project manager in the health-care field with the SAHAKARYA project in Nepal. Her photo was taken in a village in Surkhet as she observed activities being held by a SAHAKARYA partner.

15. Men and machines the time proof
Sébastien Audette provided technical assistance to a Guinean economic development organization, helping to stage fair-trade facilitation activities.

Jamie Kornarnicki provided media support in the primary education sector for the Coalition pour la Campagne sur l’éducation nationale du Ghana. Her photo captured students from the village of Gumyoko peering through the window of their school.

Sébastien Audette provided technical assistance to a Guinean economic development organization. He took this photo in a Peul village of Fouta Dialon as breakfast was being prepared for the men returning from the fields.

Cynthia Lee worked as a media consultant for the Réseau du Botswana sur l’éthique, la loi et VIH/SIDA (ethics, law, and HIV/AIDS network). Her photograph was taken at House of Hope. With the support of the WUSC, this support centre for orphans was able to develop a primary school studies program.

19. Durant la pause au centre de réhabilitation nutritionnelle
Muriel Mac-Seing is presently working as a project manager in the health-care field with the SAHAKARYA project in Nepal. In her photo: a mother and son in a nutritional rehabilitation centre supported by local partners with the SAHAKARYA project.

20. Local Radio, World Radio
Myriam Fehmiu worked in communications for a coalition of eight organizations in Guinea. CECI, in conjunction with the local radio station, produced educational programs for the resident population of villages near the camps.

21. Aids has no face
Francis Mayrand worked in Burkina Faso as a communications consultant for SEMUS-Yako. He snapped this photo during a discussion group for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

22. On the road
Marie-France Lavallière took part in educating young people in rural areas of Malawi on important health issues, such as the prevention of HIV/AIDS, hygiene, sexuality and interpersonal relations.

Janet Porter worked in Malawi for the promotion of sustainable development, the environment, and natural resources management. Photo: Taking time out of their busy day, two women came to cheer on their sons, daughters, husbands, brothers and sisters in the Mulanje Mountain Porter’s Race.

Janet Porter worked in Malawi for the promotion of sustainable development, the environment, and natural resources management. Every year on Mulanje Mountain, a gruelling 25-kilometre race is held. Many of the contestants run in their bare feet.

26. Pleasure like such
Mélissa Beaudet taught audiovisual techniques with ENFOFANM, an organization that works to defend women’s rights in Haiti. She explains the context of her photo: “During a visit to Jacmel to see other volunteer cooperants, I stopped at the Ti-mouillage beach. A group of children was cutting open coconuts and mangoes for visitors.”
