Volunteers came each day to help us. Both women and men participated in the project
Each day, we had to go get the sand we needed for the concrete foundation and the mortar required for the walls
When the foundation for the support walls was complete, we had to fill it with earth and crushed brick before starting the floor.

Singing traditional Malawian songs, the women carried the bricks to the site.
Throughout the construction, we constantly double-checked measurements to ensure they were accurate..
Even volunteers with the local agency (Mponela Aids Information and Counseling Centre) helped us every day to build the AIDS screening centre.

A group mounts the roof trusses on the walls. Several people (not shown in the photo) were inside the building to guide the movement of the beams and make sure everything went smoothly.
The women had to carry their babies while they worked. Sometimes, the oldest woman of the group would take care of the little ones so that their mothers could go about their tasks.
The village children were always around us and kept us amused with their games.
