    Forest = Food Security?

    Nepal is a chronically food insecure, food deficit country, that is prone to natural disasters, such as recent consecutive years of drought – in addition to suffering through an 11-year insurgency. The link between sustainably managed forests and food security must not be ignored – worldwide, forests provide employment and income for an estimated 1.2 billion people, thus allowing them to buy food. >>

    Increasing productivity of dairy farms to increased food security in Malawi

    In 2007-2008, Uniterra and Veterinarians Without Borders-Canada teamed up to sponsor a Dairy Animal Specialist hosted by the Bvumbwe Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society (BDFCS), Canadian veterinarian Anne Drew. Facilitating and expanding the function of the BDFCS, and increasing productivity of dairy farms leads to increased food security for Malawi. Besides the milk consumed on-farm – usually a liter a day or so - dairy farming is now the most lucrative form of farming in Malawi, and often the main source of income for the farm family. >>
