Economic Developement

Growing poverty among marginalized communities in developing countries is a powerful factor in political instability
and a threat to international security. Doing battle against poverty through economic development is the very core
of Uniterra Programme’s objectives.

Our strategies
Whether it be agriculture or rural development, fair trade, or social and integrated economy our actions are inspired by a decentralized and participatory vision of economic development founded primarily on:
  • The equitable integration of marginalized rural populations into the national and international economic system by way of the agricultural       sector;
  •  The sustainable use of resources as a factor in long-term growth via the approaches of social economy and community economic development;
  •  The use of training as an essential element in the appropriation of economic levers;
  •  Local (micro) development activities as they relate to  the national (macro) context, making the most of opportunities created by administrativ decentralization policies;
  •   The reinforcement of relationship structures between local civilian players, local authorities, and the private sector.
  •   Support to farmers’ organizations, collectives, and social/solidarity economy networks as they strive to increase their capacities through
  • North-South and South-South partnerships.
In the realm of fair trade, our partnerships and projects give producers in developing countries a chance to improve product quality and commercialization processes and to reinforce their organizations’ capacities.  In the North, working with specialized partners, we also promote fair trade and responsible consumerism to the Canadian public.

In the area of social economy as well as in community-based economic development, our projects and partnerships strive to support national and international networks in their strategic development efforts. We also support networks to the South as they forge alliances with Canadian networks for the purpose of exchanges of knowledge and expertise.

The sector of agriculture and rural development, the foundation of the economy in Southern countries in which we operate, is the stage for more than half of our projects. Our objectives are to assist in the process of improving the quality of farm products, and access to more lucrative markets. We also support producers’ organizations working to optimize the services they offer to members. We support the reinforcement of their management capacities and their integration into local, national, and international joint action networks
