Bolivie - Arsarbolsem

The Bolivian craftspeople association “Señor de Mayo” (ASARBOLSEM) is a non-profit organization that was created in response to the very difficult economic situation in Bolivia. In addition to natural disasters, the privatization of a number of different economic sectors generated much social pressure, which had an impact on the most vulnerable groups in Bolivian society—particularly on women and children, a substantial number of whom live on the streets. ASARBOLSEM represents more than 800 women and men from the urban and rural zones in 24 communities.

The association is managed by its members, even though 65% of them are illiterate. The association provides its members with training sessions and support in terms of the management, production and marketing of crafts. In fact, the CECI supports this organization by purchasing alpaca wool products on a fair trade basis.

Due to additional revenue generated through sales, health care is now available to members of the association. With sales figures at C$140,000 per year, the organization holds substantial economic strength and political power. ASARBOLSEM fully adheres to the principles of social justice as described by the fair trade charter.
