In Agriculture and Rural Development in Mali

Agriculture in Mali remains highly dependent on unpredictable climactic conditions and extensive agro-pastoral production systems. However, thanks to the regional integration process in West Africa, good prospects exist for high productivity crops. The priorities of Uniterra's partners are to expand and diversify agricultural production, and to strengthen the capacities of all targeted actors in this sector, from production to marketing.
AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN MALI
Area: 1,249,000 km2
Population: 13.4 million (2004)
Gross National Income (GNI) per capita: $290 US

Only 28% of Mali's national territory is arable land—and only 30% of that is exploited. Nevertheless, this is a fragile resource that is also threatened by desertification

Most of Mali receives less than 600 millimetres of precipitation per year.

ON THE GROUND

We are strengthening the technical/administrative skills of agricultural producers at every level, in collaboration with national non-governmental organizations. We also work to increase the capacities of agricultural and rural actors to interact with and influence decision-makers.

PROFILE OF A PARTNER

The Association Conseil pour le Développement (ACOD xqtaaso) is a national ngo working with Shea butter producers, mostly women’s groups. Its mission is to provide services to community organizations by supporting, defending and assisting them in initiatives that aims to improve their social, economic and cultural well-being.

In collaboration with our partners, we reinforce ACOD’s initiatives supporting the producers of the Siby region. ACOD contributed to the creation of the Maison du Karité in Sybi and participates actively in encouraging the success of agricultural communities growing crops such as Shea and fruits and vegetables. With the assistance of the ACOD, 10 groups composed of 360 women producing Shea market their products in supermarkets and hotels in Bamako and the interior.
