A FEW STATISTICS ON GUATEMALAArea: 109,000 km2 Population: 12.7 million. Over 6 million are under the age of 18 Gross National Income (GNI) per capita: $1,910 (CIDA, 2002) The majority of the Guatemalan population (58%) lives under the poverty line; 16% live on less than a dollar a day (UNICEF and publications by partners) Agriculture accounts for 22% of the GDP (CIDA, 2003) The agricultural sector employs nearly six of every ten persons (59% according to CIDA). The main crops are coffee, sugar, bananas, sugar cane, corn and beans. Cattle, sheep and swine are raised.

We offer support services to agricultural producers (production, credit, and marketing) and assist cooperatives and agri-food processing industries. Several of our projects focus on social tourism in indigenous areas, handicrafts and community economic development. A UNITERRA PARTNER IN GUATEMALAGuatemala’s Network for Equitable Tourism (REDTURS) is that country’s only non-profit organization that supports the promotion and development of equitable tourism. It’s mission is to establish a network that represents the interests of its members and also to participate in the strengthening of a strategy to reduce poverty, preserve cultures and protect the environment in Guatemala. This is to be accomplished by supporting the consolidation, promotion and marketing of community-managed equitable tourism projects.
