ON THE GROUND
We are taking advantage of the participatory and consultative practices existing in the rural communities and at the national level to increase the access to drinking water and sanitation in Bolivia, and to establish ties with actors in health and education. The reduction of infant mortality caused by waterborne illnesses is a priority, as is sensitizing communities on the principles of health and integrated management of water resources. Meeting drinking water and sanitation needs is a crucial question for Bolivia. Uniterra’s partners have targeted three priorities: increasing accessibility to drinking water in rural communities, strengthening capacities and political dialogue in water and sanitation management, and supporting health education in the Bolivian population.
PROFILE OF A PARTNER
Municipal government and Water Management Committee of Curahuara de Carangas
Curahuara de Carangas is a small indigenous municipality (Aymara) with a population of 4,000 located in the heart of the Bolivian Altiplano. The main economic activity of this community is raising lamas and alpacas and developing the potential for community tourism. The municipal and traditional authorities have identified better water quality and improved access to clean drinking water as a strategic priority for the next five years, including the sewage management system. Despite the few resources at its disposal, Curahuara de Carangas has been designated as a model municipality because of the excellence and transparency of its management.
Our volunteers Miriam Rouleau Perez en Bolivie An Aguayo for Risk-Free Childbirth: Action for Mothers and Newborns in Bolivia ''I arrived in Bolivia on July 3, 2006 to work with the rural municipality of Curahuara de Carangas, located high in the Andean plateaus, nearly 4,000 metres in altitude. My mission was to support preventive health-care actions in the municipality, which has a population of about 5,000, in order to improve the community’s health and quality of life.''
