Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition guests in Canada
March 19-April 3, 2010, Mr. Leslie Ofosu Tettey and Mrs. Judith Sawyerr from the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) are visiting Ottawa and Toronto. Their visit is an occasion to meet with members of the Canadian Global Campaign for Education (CGCE) and other civil society actors on coalition building, public dialogue, awareness raising and promotion of education for adults. Formed in 1999, the Ghana coalition is an education sector social movement integrating 200 members from various sectors of civil society who have come together to spearhead the education for all children in Ghana.

Uniterra and CUSO-VSO would like to invite you to a social evening of dialogue about global education and education in Ghana with the two guest speakers from the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition, Ms. Judith Sawyerr and Mr. Leslie Ofosu Tettey. The presentation will talk about advocacy, mobilization of members through District Education for All teams, and issues around girls' education in Ghana. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from these experts about education issues and efforts in Ghana and to network with others in the fields of development and education. Food and beverages will be served.

Luck Mervil in Botswana
“Learn to love your life and the life of people around you.”
This was Luck Mervil’s message to Batswana during his one week mission in Botswana. From March 6-13, 2010, the CECI and Uniterra spokesperson met with Uniterra volunteers and visited partner organizations. While there he sang and played with HIV positive children at Baylor Clinic, talked with orphans from Stepping Stones International and with students and widows at the University of Botswana. There were many opportunity for Luck Mervil to learn more about the situation in the country, the challenges faced every day by organizations in the field and see how Uniterra’s development workers are contributing to those organizations.

International Women's Day 2010This year's theme for International Women's Day will be launched under "Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All". Uniterra has decided to harness the talents of its field volunteers in communications to produce and share a series of audiovisual productions showing different issues women face around the world. The videos, audio productions, photos and articles will bring you to a usually less-known world, where women from different countries will tell you how they live. We hope these productions will feed your discussions and activities around March 8th!

Canadian Parliamentarians visit WUSC office while in mission to Botswana.
Uniterra's volunteers in Gaborone, Botswana, had the opportunity to exchange with a group of Canadian parliamentarians about their experiences, their successes and the challenges they are facing every day. In mid-February, the parliamentarians, members of Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association (CAPA) were visiting Botswana and Zambia in a mission to strengthen ties with Africa. Read more

"The Court was quite emotional and very interesting, but what I am looking forward to seeing is the impact at both a national and personal levels for the women who participated", says Elizabeth Desgranges, Gender specialist with Uniterra, Guatemala
Beginning of March, 2010, the National Union of Guatemalan Women (UNAMG), a Uniterra partner, has carried a Court of Conscience to denounce the sexual violence suffered by more than 1,500 women (mostly Mayan) during the internal armed conflict. The Court of Conscience is a symbolic act that will help restore dignity to the torture survivors and expose the guilt of the Guatemalan state which, according to proponents, has systematically used sexual violence as a weapon of war. This initiative also aims to urge society to commit to protect women from violence. As a Uniterra volunteer, Elizabeth Desgranges' duties include translating the testimonies of victims and experts. Subsequently, she supports UNAMG as part of a research project designed to assess the impact of court awareness on women's lives.
