Educate and Advocate
Education changes the world. As a WUSC Local Committee, there are many ways you can play a key role. You can choose from this menu of WUSC activities, or get creative and come up with your own. Determine how you want to raise awareness about global issues and international development. Change won’t happen on its own. Act now.
8 Goals
With only six years remaining until the 2015 deadline, now is the time to ensure that the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals remains at the top of political and public agendas worldwide.
Fair Trade
Making trade fair globally starts with ethical purchasing locally. Fair Trade contributes to reducing poverty by offering better trading conditions for producers and workers in developing countries. Purchase fair trade products and make them available on campus.
Bike for AIDS
Bicycles, especially if outfitted with a stretcher, can help those living with HIV and AIDS in Malawi. Fundraise (bicycle - $200 or bicycle ambulances -$380) and raise awareness about the HIV and AIDS epidemic and Millennium Development Goal #6.
MP3.FM
In sub-Saharan Africa, small-holder farmers are working hard to end hunger – for their families, communities and country. Climate change is a real threat to them right now. To grow more food and improve their lives, they need information on practical, low-cost and sustainable solutions. Radio is affordable and accessible. Raise awareness and funds to purchase MP3 recorders ($100) for African broadcast partners to share the voices of farmers on the front line of climate change.
Afghanistan Challenge
The Afghanistan Challenge campaign assists WUSC in offering hope to some of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable war-affected widows. All donations will be put towards our ongoing Vocational Training for Afghan Women Project (VTAWP) and will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government of Canada.
Shine A Light
Education is a powerful tool and without it few of us would reach our full potential. In refugee camps, girls rarely have the opportunity to pursue their education beyond primary school and without education these young people have no way out. Help WUSC to ‘Shine A Light’ on what girls can achieve if they overcome the challenges they face in accessing education in the refugee camps.
Students Without Borders
Students Without Borders™ (SWB) is a WUSC program that offers practical work opportunities in Africa, Asia and South America to students and recent graduates from Canadian universities and colleges during an academic term or upon graduation. Through this experience, SWB volunteers gain skills that are valued in the workplace while supporting the work of local partner organizations.
2010 International Seminar in Nepal
Next summer twenty post-secondary students from various regions across Canada will be joining twenty Nepalese students for the 63rd International Seminar in Nepal. This unforgettable learning opportunity builds bridges to a more equitable world and empowers participants to become development advocates on campuses and beyond. Engaging people on development issues on campus and beyond before and after the Seminar is key in reaching the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The 2010 International Seminar in Nepal will focus on “Sustainable forests and livelihoods” and will take place from May 24th to July 2nd, 2009.
Towards 2015: Symposia Series
By bringing together local experts, returned volunteers, students and faculty, an educational symposium can be a catalyst for action. All Local Committees are encouraged to apply for funding to hold events on their campus!
Student Refugee Program
Through WUSC's Student Refugee Program (SRP), Local Committees across Canada sponsor over 65 student refugees to Canada every year, enabling them to enter the country as permanent residents and pursue their education at Canadian universities and colleges. Get involved with the SRP and learn first-hand about refugee and resettlement issues (see the Sponsor a student refugee section further in this newsletter).
