Burkina Faso result statement

Following on the series of results statements initiated in the last Inside-News, this issue looks at Burkina Faso's two sector, Health-HIV-Aids and Economic Development, and their achievements since the first phase of Uniterra.

14 partner organisations in the economic sector and seven in the health-HIV-Aids sector have increased their capacities through the program. In total, 103 volunteers, including 61 women, achieved 9,583 persons-day of work and 6,000 people, including 77% women, have increased their skills. For the health-HIV-Aids component, these skills are in communications, awareness campaigns, psychosocial support and collective entrepreneurship. For the economic sector, the skills are in marketing, natural resource management and community services.

As a result of increased capacity in the health-HIV-Aids sector, the quality of services for people living with HIV provided by the Association pour le développement des initiatives de prévention en santé and Responsabilité-Espoir-Vie-Solidarité has improved, namely at the level of the presentation of analysis results, the management of medication and care services. There were noticeably fewer cases of missed treatment and an increased development of income generating activities. All this is contributing to the prevention of HIV transmission and to the improvement of affected people’s living conditions. The partners also contributed to the reduction of the prevalence rate which went from 1,6% in 2007 to 1,2% in 2010, according to UNAIDS.

As a result of increased capacity in the economic sector, the quality of the services provided by the Union des productrices de produits de karité de la Sissili/Ziro and the women rice parboilers cooperatives of Bama and Banzon has improved. Services such as consolidated marketing, construction and access to a rice-parboiling centre, production quality control and reduction of firewood, enabled 350 women rice parboilers to increase tenfold their revenues and 2,000 shea-butter women producers to double their revenues since Uniterra started working with them in 2006. At the same time, the Coalition burkinabé pour les droits des femmes supported three partners in the development of strategies to improve the consideration of equality between women and men.
